Each pack of U-turn vouchers contains 5 vouchers. Currently the cost of a pack is R100 or R20 per voucher.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”What does one voucher provide to someone in need of help?” tab_id=”1571324358847-a933be90-dbb0″][vc_column_text]One U-turn voucher entitles the holder to one meal or item of clothing, and they are designed to cultivate a culture of accountability.

If someone does not have a voucher, we ask them to join us for an hour of work which might include ragging/recycling fabric donated to U-turn, joining a planting team to plant indiginous vegetation, etc.

Most importantly, when accessing a meal or clothing, they also have access to group therapy, Bible study and motivational interviewing to help spark volition for a better life with dignity.

From our Service Centre they can access an extended rehabilitation and skills development programme that ends with permanent independent employment in the open labour market.

The voucher is the start of this journey and represents much more than a meal or clothing item. Thank you for giving responsibly![/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”What does “Responsible Giving“ mean?” tab_id=”1571324665704-e209ad66-86ae”][vc_column_text]U-turn vouchers are reliable and responsible way to give to people looking for help on the streets. They are a good alternative to providing cash (which often goes to fuelling addiction) or food (which creates a dependency and keeps people living on the streets for longer).

U-turn vouchers provide basic needs relief, while putting people in touch with a rehabilitation and skills development programme so that they can start a journey toward employment.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”I offered a voucher to someone in need and they refused it. What should I do?” tab_id=”1571324962803-5e99bee4-0320″][vc_column_text]We have seen many graduates from our programme who started their journey when a kind stranger, like you,  gave them a voucher.

The person who refuses the voucher is either looking for cash (which often fuels an addiction to drugs and/or alcohol) or they are not familiar with U-turn vouchers.

Since launching the vouchers in 2009, we’ve found the most effective thing you can do is to continue offering the vouchers, gently, with a smile on your face.

If there is time, you can explain to the person that you do want to help, and that you want them to have a future off the street. For this reason, you cannot give them with money but are giving them a U-turn voucher that will provide them with a meal or clothing, but also put them in touch with a rehabilitation and skills development programme.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”What if my voucher is thrown away?” tab_id=”1571308152275-b3c6315a-687f”][vc_column_text]The funds you paid for the vouchers go directly to U-turn’s Service Centre for people who are homeless, and the centre serves over 1,000 people who are homeless every year. The majority of people who access services from our Service Centre do not have a voucher. We need to cover the costs of providing food, clothing, therapy and support. The vouchers you have purchased, whether redeemed or not, help us to cover the cost of assisting people and it is deeply appreciated. Subscribe using the form above.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”What if my voucher is sold on the black market?” tab_id=”1571310877627-e1d58c6e-c966″][vc_column_text]The voucher is a ticket to support and rehabilitation. If the voucher is sold to someone who then redeems it from our Service Centre, we welcome whoever accesses these services and welcome the opportunity to interact with the person who is need of our services (even if its not the original recipient of the voucher).

However, it should be noted that since launching U-turn vouchers in 2009, there has not yet been a significant problem with vouchers being resold.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Someone said they didn’t want a voucher because U-turn doesn’t help them. Is this true?” tab_id=”1571311261240-05896b24-7ae2″][vc_column_text]U-turn staff have themselves encountered this problem with offering vouchers to individuals asking for money. When pressed for more information it is evident that the comment is designed to elicit money rather than a voucher.

Giving money to people on the street frequently goes to supporting drug and alcohol addiction, and does more harm than good.

Another reason for this comment is that the Service Centre  provides three meals a day according to a strict schedule. If people arrive between meals, we ask them to either join a group therapy programmes until the next meal time or wait until the next meal.

If you do encounter someone saying that U-turn doesn’t help them, please take the time to get more information and get in touch with us, so that we can investigate the allegation.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Can I track if my vouchers get redeemed?” tab_id=”1571323743476-75fc338d-ce9d”][vc_column_text]Vouchers do not have unique identifying marks or numbers, and so it is not currently possible to track vouchers from purchase to redemption.

However, if you are trying to help a particular individual who is homeless and know the person’s name, feel free to ask if the individual has been accessing our Service Centre. We track and record every individual and every service instance accessed in an electronic database that is updated daily real-time.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_accordion][/vc_column][/vc_row]
